Finding related log messages is difficult when searching through huge log volumes. Papertrail allows you to search by context and discover which messages originated from the same users or systems. You can also click on hostnames when troubleshooting system crashes to see log messages from a single sender. Though search queries are normally matched against individual lines, contextual search allows you to see all log messages in a multi-line exception, which can greatly reduce the time it takes to analyze and troubleshoot problems. By clicking on IP addresses, you can locate all requests generated by a single user and build an infrastructure-wide history of events. Contextual search helps you establish the chain of events leading up to an incident. Additionally, the customizable event viewer in Papertrail lets you highlight high-severity messages so you never miss important events.

It can be difficult to extract insights from your log data when you’re only looking at low-level event details. This is where the log velocity analytics feature in Papertrail comes in. This feature allows you to see the volume of log or event data over time to help you get a quick understanding of high-level details such as how many times latency spiked over the last few days or how today’s app error rate compares with yesterday’s.
